Celestine Davis to speak at Sister Keepers No Greater Love Conference 2017
Celestine sees her role as a teacher, encourager, facilitator, and collaborator who works diligently her community. She is the current vice president of Sister Keepers and is grateful for its mission and vision for increasing her maturity in the ways of God and opportunities to serve Him. She is looking forward to continued growth with Sister Keepers and its members in whatever role she can contribute.
As a member of Grove Park Christian Church, Celestine accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at the age of 14 at a summer camp of Christian Church Disciples of Christ. She describes herself as a writer, visual artist, emerging filmmaker, and community arts promoter. She is the co-founder and Festival Director of the annual Down East Flick Fest held in Greenville. She is the creator of the visual journaling workshop, “ReCreations: Rewriting Your Life Script” and facilitates writing-to-heal workshops.
Celestine has participated in regional arts and writing programs since she was a teen. As one of its original members, she is the Treasurer Emeritus of the former Black Artists Guild of Kinston. She has served as a Regional Representative for NC Writers’ Network (NCWN), which is the largest network of writers with members in North Carolina, South Carolina and adjacent areas since 2009. Also in 2009, she founded the Scribes and Artists writing group that meets weekly to share, critique, and generally support other writers. She is currently developing programming for Artists for Community Enrichment (ACE) also known as Artists United (AU), which is a collaborative of artists who create events to connect audiences to socially relevant issues through various media.
Celestine has a heart for service and loves to help others reach their potential. She was the first Executive Director of OIC of Lenoir, Greene, and Duplin Counties and secured their first site from the City of Kinston and first grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. She also co-wrote the grant secured by Kinston Promise Neighborhood for its 21st Century Community Learning Centers and served as its first Program Director. She has often volunteered in literacy and ESL programs. She has either taught writing, literature, and film studies, and other humanities at East Carolina University in Greenville and Martin Community College in Williamston. She currently teaches GED and English Language Acquisition (ELA) at Lenoir Community College. As a writing coach, one of Celestine’s success stories has been published author, Maude Pickett Smith, author of “Hester: Historical Fiction about the Life of a Slave” and Beverley W. Haynes’ “Single Against Your Will….12 Things That Keep You Single.” Her own book, “You Matter” will be available soon.
Celestine has a Masters in English Studies and a Post Graduate Certificate in Multicultural Transnational Literatures from East Carolina University.
